I'd made a long mental list of things I'm looking forward to (mostly food related), but near the top of the list is being by the sea. I'm also looking forward to being able to spend Christmas at home, without having to rush back "home" to Brussels!
The 21st of July. Just another day for most of the world. Not so for those Belgians, as it's their National Day, meaning they get a chance to celebrate their unique culture with well, as expected, lots of weirdness (giant connect 4, people dressed as wasps, people practicing martial arts, cows! etc etc).
It was also the day King Albert II abdicated to his son, Philippe, so it was an extra special and momentous occasion. Brussels Airlines were offering a free flight to anyone called Albert or Philippe. Yes, the Belgians are insane.
Mostly people celebrated Belgium by eating almost exclusively fried food, as is their way, and/or drinking beer by the bucketload. Still, the weather was beautiful and it was a fun day out.
